Coimbra Polytechnic
is currently comprised of 6 separate colleges with 10,000 full-time students
and 700 professors. The Institute offers an
incredibly diverse
field of study, from education and the arts, business administration, communication
and information science, tourism, agricultural sciences, to health technology and engineering.
As a Polytechnic school, it has adopted a more up to date and practical approach
to education, which has helped foster a reputation for quality education.
The Institute has long benefited from its close links to local and national
enterprises,
which in many cases has given its students a career advantage. Coimbra Polytechnic
has 2 full-time research centers and has strongly invested its energies in
investigation at the national and international level. Coimbra Polytechnic
is also proud of the many fine institutions it is in partnership with; about
100, some of which have been research, student and teacher exchange partners
since 1990. These links to schools and other organizations in other countries
are just one manifestation of Coimbra Polytechnic's search for excellence
and dynamism.
Analyzing the remarkable success of Portugal in the great age of sea exploration,
the noted historian Daniel J.Boorstin wrote the following (with kindness):
"Separated only by a tiny strait from Africa, the Portuguese were remarkably
free of racial prejudice or provincialism. Their ancestors were [Iberians,
Celts, Romans, Germanics, Moors and others]. They intermarried with Africans
and Asians. Portugal became a small proto-America, a place for the mixing of
peoples - Christians, Jews and Muslims…The divers physical, mental, temperamental,
traditional, aesthetic, and literary resources enriched one another, providing
the varied energies and the motely knowledge required to reach out to the open
ocean and come back home again."
The Discoverers, 1986
That same spirit of openness and cooperation, combining different peoples
and viewpoints to achieve unique results still abides today at the Polytechnic
Institute of Coimbra. As an Erasmus charter member, Coimbra Polytechnic has
been extremely active in student and teacher exchange. We believe that our
institution excels at receiving and integrating exchange students and teachers.
We have much to offer academically, culturally and socially and are proud of
the uniformly good experiences visiting students and teachers have had with
us.
Our web pages are constantly under construction with frequent new additions
so please refer back to our site often. Feel free to contact us concerning
any questions or information you require, and remember that we take great pleasure
in welcoming visitors.
